USDA Issues Major Recall: Listeria in BrucePac Meat

United States – The USDA stated that over 150 schools received BrucePac products that possibly contained listeria, according to a Thursday statement.

All sizzling and fully cooked meat and poultry processed at BrucePac in Durant, Okla. on the dates beginning from May 31 to October 8 cannot be considered safe to eat according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection, as reported by The Hills.

Recall Expanded to Include Additional 11 Million Pounds of Meat

The company added that to the 9.9 million pounds initially recalled for being potentially contaminated with listeria; it was adding another 11 million pounds of food bought by schools and on store shelves in Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Indiana, and other areas.

It was announced on Oct. 11, and the company stated that no adverse reactions have been reported regarding consumption of these products as of Oct. 17.

A Serious Health Risk

USDA identified ready to eat chicken from BrucePac as the source of the Listeria outbreak. Listeriosis can be developed by bacteria, which can result in fever, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsion, which may sometimes be preceded by diarrhea.

The above effects can be lethal if the person is a senior citizen or has a weaker immune system or if pregnant women are exposed to the same, as reported by The Hills.

Separate Listeria Investigation

This recall has occurred at a time when Boar’s Head listeria outbreak that has been the subject of an investigation by legislators.
