United States: The office of the U.S. Trade Representative stated that there is a possibility that patents will be filled with ineffective or dangerous drugs from illegally operating online pharmacies.
In the report published on Wednesday, the office named it in 19 nations, which caused an eyebrow to be raised for the possible transshipment of fake or pirated medicine, as reported by The Hills.
Ambassador Calls for Global Cooperation
“Counterfeiting and piracy is a shared global concern, harming people not just in the United States but also other countries,” Ambassador Katherine Tai said in a statement. “I urge our trading partners to join us in the fight against counterfeits and pirated goods.”
Notorious Market List Released
The office also published the Notorious Market List, which was dedicated to the increase in the number of illicit Internet pharmacies. It urged its trading partners to enhance criminal and border ones to fight counterfeit medicines.
The list contains 38 identified virtual markets and 33 real-life markets that are claimed to be involved in or facilitate “significant levels of trademark counterfeiting or copyright piracy.”
Staggering Statistics on Illegal Pharmacies
According to The Associated Press, 96 percent of the online pharmacies were proving to be working illegally, doing business without proper license, or selling medicine without distinction of prescriptions or any safety statements.

The report described the fact of counterfeit sales’ transition, for instance, in China, telling that the Internet Drug Index in which these pharmacies’ sites often look like legal ones, sometimes even having the statements that they are FDA-approved, as reported by The Hills.
Successes in Combating Counterfeiting
The agency indicated that their research produced numerous new successes over the past year, which included cooperation between the US and other countries in pirate issues and efforts in counterfeiting by Vietnam, Brazil, Kuwait, and the Philippines.
