The beneficial effects of CBD treatment for autism disorders require additional thorough scientific studies to verify safety and clinical outcomes.

United States: A recent analysis delivered during the European Congress of Psychiatry in Madrid brings optimistic findings about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) treatment to families. Researchers determined non-locomotive cannabis compounds like cannabidiol (CBD) display potential to improve autistic social skills and decrease anxiety symptoms among autistic children and adolescents, as reported by HealthDay.

Study Highlights

Research led by Dr. Lara Branco from the University of São Paulo in Brazil evaluated data extracted from three clinical trials involving autistic children who averaged ten years old. They found that CBD use was linked to:

  • Improved social responsiveness
  • Reduced disruptive behaviors
  • Decreased anxiety levels

“These are promising effects, especially given the lack of effective treatment pathways for many patients,” said Dr. Branco.

CBD: A Non-Intoxicating Cannabis Compound

Harvard Medical School states that CBD exists as the second major active component in marijuana behind THC. The consumption of CBD fails to generate a high. Research indicates CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body which enables it to influence mood and behavior and other health-related processes.

Potential Benefits Beyond Behavior

Some children in the study also showed signs of better sleep, although this effect did not reach statistical significance. Nevertheless, the overall impact on anxiety and engagement was clear.

Expert Voices Welcome New Direction

According to Dr. Geert Dom who holds the presidency of the European Psychiatric Association “Autism presents major difficulties for both families and clinical practitioners.” The study brings encouraging progress in identifying medical treatments for autism.

More Research Still Needed

Research experts warn against treating ASD with CBD since it lacks conclusive treatment status. Special care is needed for the complete understanding of CBD safety and effectiveness because extensive and extended clinical trials should be performed, as reported by HealthDay.

“We still need much more data to confidently recommend CBD as a therapy,” said Dr. Branco.
